AKG N5005 Review – Engaging Detailed Desires
Package/presentation
In most reviews, the least exciting part of any review is reading about what comes in the accessory package.
AKG managed to not to disappoint. It covers all its potential client. From its hardcore audiophile which just wants to plug their IEM into their latest AK product, to the more hip consumer who is okay with Apple given up the 3.5mm jack for the push towards Bluetooth, AKG covered everyone. The package includes a 2.5mm balance cable, a bluetooth cable and an iphone/android cable.
It comes with all the tip that one would need. It included the exotic tips such a spin fit, how often do you see this? I do not understand why all UIEM doesn’t come with a better set of silicon tips; it is arguably as important as the IEM design if not more. A poor seal only makes your product sound inferior.
It is good to see a flagship IEM finally packaged with accessories necessarily in order for its end user to find what works best for them.
Product construction and fit
Using ceramic enclosure became popular after Sennheiser used it first to my knowledge on their IE800. However IE800 housing is largely is out of ceramic enclosure while N5005 only uses it for its back plating. Sennheiser claims the purpose of ceramic housing is for its scratch resistance and its sonic characteristic which they used for tuning the IE800.
It is unclear whether AKG has taken advantage of sonic quality of the ceramic backplate. What I know is working with ceramic in such size is difficult and any product that includes it is worthy of paying attention to.
In terms of construction, the product feels premium. In terms of fit, it might be slightly large for smaller ears. So you got to try for yourself to know for sure.
If I was to pick on something, it would be the mmcx used. It makes finding after market replacement cable uneasy. I know only about one IEM cable maker having access to such mmcx.
