Starry-Eared: Finding Emotion in Noble’s Van Gogh

Seal Everything

But none of this works — and I mean none of it — if you don’t get a proper seal.

I learned this the hard way.

Out of the box, I threw on a standard silicone tip and thought, “Hm, this sounds… okay?” Everything was there, technically — but the weight was missing. Bass felt light, and staging collapsed a bit. It was clear, but a little underwhelming. I almost wrote it off.

Then I switched to Comply foam tips.

Instant difference. Night and day. The seal brought back the foundation — suddenly, the low-end had body again. Stage depth returned. Vocals settled into their proper space. If you don’t have a good fit, the Van Gogh sounds incomplete. With the right tips, it blossoms. The Complys especially bring out its warmth and spatial qualities without dulling the treble.

Foam isn’t for everyone, but I can’t overstate how much a proper seal unlocks this IEM. If you’ve got the Van Gogh or are thinking about it, try different tips. It’s not an accessory decision — it’s part of the voicing.
